About MealWhim

A friendly kitchen drawer of free tools for deciding what to cook, planning the week and getting the numbers right.

What it does

MealWhim helps with the everyday questions of a home kitchen: what to make tonight, what to buy for the week, how to feed six from a recipe for four, how much a cup of flour weighs, what gas mark 4 is in Celsius, when the chicken is done and how long the leftovers will keep.

Where the ideas and figures come from

The meal ideas are a list of well-known everyday dishes, each with a short description written for this site. They are prompts, not recipes. Vegetarian and vegan tags describe each dish as written here; nothing is labelled gluten-free or allergen-free, so anyone cooking for an allergy should check their own ingredients.

Kitchen figures come from named public sources, credited on the page that uses them: safe cooking temperatures from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, fridge and freezer times from the USDA's FoodKeeper data, ingredient weights from King Arthur Baking's ingredient weight chart, and gas marks from the conventional gas mark table. Weights and times are approximate guides, and MealWhim gives no nutrition or health advice.

How it works

Every tool runs in your browser. Your meal plan, favourites and pantry ticks are saved in your browser's own storage on this device, and nothing you type is sent to a server. A share link carries the plan inside the link itself.

The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies or cross-site tracking and never receives what you type into the tools. There are no ads and no accounts. Details are on the privacy page.
